Expert Workshops

The GMES and Africa Action Plan is a key deliverable of the Second Action Plan of the 8th Africa-EU Strategic Partnership (Science, Information Society, Space).

In order to achieve tangible results by the end of 2012, the Space Troika (established to steer the Space component of the 8th partnership) proposed a modular approach to pave the way to validate the overall GMES and Africa Action Plan. The methodology consists of identifying 3 thematic areas to be firstly addressed by organising Expert Workshops in Africa. The GMES and Africa Coordination Team adopted the Space Troika recommendations and have mandated BRAGMA to organise a series of invitation only expert workshops during 2012 and 2013 that address specific thematic areas that are critical to the finalisation of the GMES and Africa Action Plan.

This series of invitation only expert workshops organized by BRAGMA will be financed by the European Commission under the 10th EDF and supported under the framework of the JAES Support Mechanism (JAES SM), which aims to contribute to implementation of the JAES Action Plans (AP), producing concrete and visible results.

Experts will provide their input for the finalisation of the GMES & Africa Action Plan through participation in a series of thematic workshops and pre- and post-workshop online discussion hosted on the BRAGMA Portal. Each workshop will bring together thematic experts as well as representatives of key institutions and existing projects.

The GMES & Africa Marine and Coastal Areas Workshop, Mombasa, 09 - 10 October 2012 brought together over 80 African and European Marine and Coastal areas experts, focal points with representatives from the African Union Commission and European Commission. The participants worked in three groups on topics that will contribute to the Marine and Coastal Areas chapter of the GMES and Africa Baseline Study. Click here to download the workshop report.

The second GMES & Africa Thematic Workshop focusing on Water Resources Management will take place in Abuja, Nigeria, 14-15 May 2013. Click here to download resources for this workshop.

The third GMES & Africa Thematic Workshop will focus on Long term Management of Natural Resources and will take place in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.
